At three o'clock on Friday afternoon, the office air hummed with the scent of caffeine and the quiet chaos of slacking off. Xiao Zhang had his phone face down on the corner of his desk, its screen glowing with a food delivery app—his fried chicken combo showed "on the way." He licked his lips, tapping the air with his keyboard as he lied: "Boss Wang, I'm just finalizing the proposal outline. I promise the draft will be done by the end of the day!" Just as he took a sneaky bite of chicken wing (sucking the sauce off his fingers before the delivery guy reached the floor), he heard leather shoes approaching. Swiftly stuffing the fried chicken wrapper into his drawer, he looked up to see Boss Wang standing at his desk, holding a coffee cup, his glasses glinting as his gaze swept over Xiao Zhang's computer screen.
"Xiao Zhang," Boss Wang said, pointing to the monitor, "you're making good progress on this PPT—already on the last slide?"
Xiao Zhang's heart sank—he'd only finished three slides; the rest were blank "placeholder" pages. He forced a laugh, a bead of sweat forming on his forehead. "Oh, that's… my 'minimalist' design. Leaving negative space adds artistic flair, you know?"
Boss Wang nodded, leaning in to study the screen. Suddenly, he tapped the "blank" last slide. Xiao Zhang's back went cold—he was about to make up an excuse when Boss Wang pointed and chuckled. "Nice screensaver. A bunch of little penguins sliding around on ice? Did you make this animation yourself?"
Xiao Zhang followed his finger—and realized he'd accidentally left his screensaver as a dynamic penguin animation during his slacking spree, forgetting to switch it back. He scratched his head, grinning awkwardly. "Uh, found it online as a template. Thought it was relaxing, so I… set it as my screensaver."
Boss Wang fought back a smile. "Relaxation's good. But next time, skip the flashy screensavers—they might distract from work." He turned to leave, then paused. "Oh, and where exactly are you on that PPT? The final version needs to be ready for the morning meeting tomorrow. Don't make me wait."
Xiao Zhang watched his boss's retreating back, then glanced at the half-empty fried chicken box in his drawer. He popped the last wing into his mouth. This little slacking session—total win.
